Mission & History

About Us

Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Midlands helps children realize their potential and build their futures. We nurture children and strengthen communities. We couldn't do any of it without you.

Mission

Create and support one-to-one mentoring relationships that ignite the power and promise of youth.

Vision

All youth achieve success in life and achieve their full potential

Empowering Youth Since 1959

For more than 60 years, Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Midlands has operated under the belief that inherent in every child is the ability to succeed and thrive in life. As an affiliate of the nation’s largest donor-and-volunteer-supported mentoring network, Big Brothers Big Sisters creates and supports meaningful, monitored matches between adult volunteers and children, ages 7 through 25, across the Omaha and Lincoln areas in Nebraska and Council Bluffs in Iowa. We develop positive friendships that have a direct and lasting effect on the lives of young people.

By partnering with parents/guardians, volunteers, and others in the community we are accountable for each child in our program achieving:

  • Higher aspirations, greater confidence, and better relationships
  • Avoidance of risky behaviors
  • Educational success

Land Acknowledgement

Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Midlands would like to acknowledge the Umoⁿhoⁿ (Omaha) and Očhéthi Šakówiŋ (Sioux) land that we are on today along with all the Indigenous Peoples of this community that are still here today. We do this to reaffirm our commitment and responsibility to improve relationships between nations and improve our understanding of local Indigenous peoples and their cultures. We are not experts, but we are committed to continuing our education on how we can best serve as allies to our community.

Our Values

We believe that when every young person has access to a positive mentor, their lives transform for the better, empowering them with a stronger sense of belonging and the opportunity to achieve their full potential.
