Be A Mentor

It Takes Little to Be Big
Our Community-Based Mentoring program gives you the flexibility to build a meaningful one-to-one connection with a young person in the community. As a mentor ("Big or Big Couple"), you'll spend at least four hours each month with your mentee ("Little"), doing activities you both enjoy.
Mentoring doesn't have to be complicated or expensive. Grab ice cream, shoot hoops, visit a local park, bake cookies, explore a museum, or simply take a walk and talk. It's the time you spend together that matters most.
As a Big, you'll encourage your Little to try new things, build confidence, and discover what's possible. Whether you're introducing them to a new hobby, helping them set goals, or simply being a consistent, caring adult they can count on, your presence can make a lasting difference.
You don't have to be perfect—you just have to show up.
In the MentorU program, we provide adult mentors to high school students. This Site-Based Mentoring program is only offered at Thomas Jefferson and Abraham Lincoln High Schools in Council Bluffs, Iowa, and Millard North, Horizon, and High Schools in Omaha. The objective of this program is to help students who are enrolled in an academic enrichment class stay on track for graduation and success.
In line with Big Brothers Big Sisters of America, our mission is to create and support mentoring relationships that help all young people reach their potential. In providing mentoring services, we welcome all people to our program. We are committed to fostering environments where people feel valued and have a genuine sense of connection, safety, and belonging. We work with community partners to connect our staff and volunteers with essential trainings and educational opportunities to ensure we are following best practices and providing proper resources to the youth and families we serve.
Role Models Make an Impact
Studies show that children who have role models are more likely to improve in school and in their relationships with family and friends, and less likely to skip school or use illegal drugs or alcohol. Students who are successful in school are less likely to drop out, abuse drugs, or commit crimes. In fact, youth who participate in our program demonstrate improved academic performance, have better relationships with peers and family, and are less likely to become involved with drugs and alcohol.
