I’m Max, a sophomore at Thomas Jefferson High School in Council Bluffs!
I started a new program called MentorU this year. Once a week, I start my day in homeroom with my MentorU Coordinator, Kristin. Every week is something new. We’re learning a lot about ourselves so we can figure out what we might like to do in the future.
Recently, we talked about bias. Bias is how we feel about other things or people. In class, they always ask us questions we haven’t been asked before. It’s hard, but I think it’s important to think about how we talk to people and how we want to be treated. I like that MentorU gives students like me a friend who can help us through life and the heavy topics that you don’t usually share with anyone.
My mentor Andrew is a person I can talk to and a friend that I can always count on to be there when no one else is. Andrew has taught me the importance of having a support system because being alone is much worse than not having anyone to talk to.
Andrew and I have a lot in common. We both are very nerdy and love video games. We’ve really connected this school year. Andrew is helping me start to think about my plans after high school. I’d prefer just to enjoy my time, but Andrew continues to push me to start thinking about those big decisions.
